The web of illusion

(A brief insight)

During meditation, or even in normal routine activities of our daily life- whenever we begin to be attentive to the way our mind works- we can notice our thoughts, the frequent inner narratives- memories, imagination and the monologue.

Some are neutral harmless practical thoughts, such as what should we eat for dinner?  But many others, could be seen to have a psychological aspect, that revolves around our ego.

Among these, there are two obvious kinds of thought patterns, that we may be able to identify easily. These thoughts move around spinning a web of illusion around us. At the center of this web, is our ego.

Some such thoughts, weave a fabric that feels warm and cozy to our ego- these are fantasies of desire, that paint a picture of happy events- our realized hopes, fulfilled dreams, or simple illusory scenarios, which utterly satisfy and strengthen our ego. They make us feel secure, safe and content. Other such thoughts are negative, gloomy, pessimistic and sad, creating a dark thick veil of fear around our ego.

All such thoughts, create a web of illusion surrounding ego.

The positive happy thoughts stimulate it, through imaginary fulfilment of desires. While the negative thoughts about dreaded events, disturb the ego, with imagined projections of insecurity and fear.

The reality is, these are equally unreliable thoughts, whether they engage with ego through the illusion of desires or fear. Either way, the illusion of ego is maintained and strengthened through such thoughts.

When this truth is noticed, this elaborate web of illusion becomes transparent- the ego hiding at its center, is seen through.

In the moment this is seen clearly, there is an instantaneous freedom from this whole web of illusion, including the ego hiding at its center.

In the clarity of this timeless moment, we are naked only as our reality, and there is no ego. The understanding of this moment, is not conceptual, it is spontaneous, fresh and new in every here now.

A sudden flash of insight into the illusion of thoughts, weaved as a web around the ego- brings the understanding, clarity and freedom, from the mechanism that sustains ego.
